The decision follows an increased career workload for Rains which will make it hard to fulfil his duties in building on the successful start he made in re-launching the Junior programme in international competition.

Commenting on the announcement BAFA Chairman Gary Marshall said, ‘Having spoken with Steve, he has informed me of his intention to leave the post. I would like to thank Steve and his wife Jenny for all their efforts during the past few years. Steve, working with his committed team of coaches and support staff, has overseen the re-launch of the Junior Team in international competition. It should not be underestimated the amount of time, energy and indeed personal finance, which Steve has invested in this cause.’

Marshall continued ‘We are sorry to see Steve go but he has left a tremendous legacy for the football community in this country.’

Commenting on his decision, Rains said ‘I am very proud of what our players and our staff have achieved over the last few years. I wish the programme well for the future.’

BAFA will now start the process of appointing a new Head Coach for the Great Britain Junior Programme. At present there is no timescale on when the position will be advertised for applicants.
