On the day that Kelly Holmes took Gold in the Womens 800m Final at the Olympics in Athens and the GB Olympic team overhauled the Russians on the medal table, the GB Lions defeated Russia in the European Championship B Tournament 24-21 in France.

In a spirited team performance the Lions took the lead with less than 2 minutes to go in the game thanks to a second touchdown catch by Mark Squire from Adam Lane. Mark Cohen caught the 2 point conversion.

The scores were tied at 7-7 at the end of the 1st quarter after Junior Price caught a touchdown pass from Adam Lane and towards the end of the half the Lions had a touchdown called back and had to settle for a Pete Rogers field goal.

Following another Russion touchdown at the start of the 4th quarter the Lions lit up the scoreboard again with a second touchdown strike by Adam Lane, this time to Mark Squire. The ensuing 2 point conversion failed.

Earlier in the day at the Moulonguet Stadium, the hosts, France defeated Spain 28-0. The French led 7-0 at half time and pulled away in the second half.
