As Loughborough University waved farewell to a staggering fifty-five Students who will represent Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics, another national squad, the GB Lions American Football team, quickly filled the void with a ninety man squad picked from twenty-eight British teams.

The Lions are in preparation for their upcoming friendly game against the French national team on November 15th and Loughborough provided a fantastic venue to bring the squad into shape. Loughborough University has seen a 36 million capital investment in world class sports facilities over recent years and this has created state-of-the-art facilities for an extensive range of sports - all easily accessible and located on one campus.

Camp commenced at noon on Friday and the Lions made good use of the facilities, running six on field practices over the three days of camp. This camp was not just about field activities though. Speed and strength testing, meetings and film sessions prepared the squad for the upcoming clash in France. Also, to help the players along the way Head Coach Riq Ayub invited a former Lions star player, Nigel Dias to share some of his GB experiences with the current squad. In a passionate speech, Dias explained his pride just to have worn a Great Britain jersey and how the opportunity had motivated him to prepare and play to the best of his ability.

The main task of the Loughborough camp was for the coaches to evaluate the whole squad before selecting a forty-five man travelling team for France. The French fixture provides the Lions with the first opportunity of a competitive game this year after previously planned games against Sweden and Denmark fell through.

Coach Ayub said of the camp, I would like to thank Loughborough University for the great service and hospitality over the three days. I would also like to thank Loughborough Aces Head Coach, Jason Scott and his staff for their tireless assistance over the weekend. But Finally I must congratulate Mahamadou Dooma Niakate and Paul Summers that collected the PAW excellence awards for offense and defense respectively
