The BAFA recently met with Graham Fowler (Chairman) of University Sport Birmingham Volleyball Club - CCPR Sports Club of the Year (SCOTY) runner-up. The agenda for the meeting was to gain knowledge from the success story of the Club’s wider-community inclusive sports club that provides a service beyond the University campus.

Speaking on the meeting, BAFA WSP Manager, Ken Walters, commented, "Graham manages a vibrant and thriving University based club that engages with the Birmingham community. It is clear that BAFA, and its student membership, can benefit from the knowledge he has gained in achieving his successes".

Graham, humble in his acceptance of the recent award, added, "Our success stems from the long-term continuity and commitment provided by the community members within our club - this is where the award has to go. These persons are elected and take responsibility for the delivery of club with partnership and engagement from the transient student population". Graham added, "The key challenge with this club structure is not to marginalise the role of the student participation, but to channel the creativity and enthusiasm they bring. Our club delivers sport for athletes in BUSA competition as well as the community based national leagues".

BUAFL CEO, Andy Fuller, added, "I was disappointed at not being able to join Ken at the meeting due to ill-health on that day. Nonetheless the reports from the meeting were very encouraging and I am confident that models of best practice for BUAFL teams will now evolve from the upcoming BAFA Club Governance documents based on Graham's successful model".

Ken added. "The work Graham has done will influence and support the ongoing dialogue and consultation between the BAFL and BUAFL as they work in partnership to improve the offer of participation in Universities and the wider community. There are strengths and weaknesses in both associations. By working together they will begin to bridge this gap ".

To conclude, Graham has kindly agreed to continue to offer advice and guidance in these developments - for which BAFA is extremely grateful. Gary Marshall, BAFA Chairman, would like to thank Graham Fowler for his support and wish him success in the coming season.
